Sank, Spezia. 26/10/1929
Whilst on route from Naples to Genoa, G-AADN had left Ostia in a gale after refuelling. Dusk was falling when the port engine developed trouble, and this resulted in a forced landing off Spezia. Captain Burt's SOS call was not received due to it coinciding with a test transmission from a ship in harbour, and it was only by chance that the flying boat was seen and taken in tow some hours later by the tug Famiglia. In the dark and the gale the flying boat was almost unmanageable in spite of the crew's efforts to maintain a heading with the two good engines. In the end all three towlines parted in quick succession, and the flying boat capsized and sank without trace other than the bodies of the pilot and radio operator, the four passengers on board, as well as the crew of three, who were all drowned. None of the mails were recovered.
