8th November 1939:
Gunfire from five Japanese naval planes forced Imperial Airways De Havilland DH86A registered G-ADUE flying from Hong Kong to French Indo-China, to land on the Japanese occupied island
of Waichow, off South China. The plane was hit by 92 bullets.

Although the three passengers were released, Captain Wilson, the crew, mail and the aircraft were detained till 15th November without compensation from the Japanese who claimed the plane had flown too close to a military installation. Future services gave the island a wide berth.
