The lifelines of the British Empire now extend across blue horizons, and Imperial Airways use the Short "Empire" flying boat to span oceans and continents. Four Bristol Pegasus engines totalling 3000 h.p. drive this 40,500 lb. ship 150 m.p.h. for 1670 miles. It carries 17 passengers and a crew of 5. Luxurious sleeping and lounge accommodation are provided.

AIRLINER
The Armstrong-Whitworth "Ensign" shows the trend to large, fast transports capable of flying huge loads great distances. The "Ensign" carrying a payload of 21,000 lbs. has a total weight of 48,500 lbs., yet it cruises at 202 m.p.h. As the "Ensign" is often landed at small off-line airports it has a landing speed of only 67 m.p.h. Carries 40 passengers and a crew of 5.
